Caliban Below, created by VR visionary and VFX veteran Michael Conelly (digital effects supervisor on projects such as Snow White and the Huntsman and Charlotte’s Web), is now available on the iOS app store, turning iPads and iPhones into windows on a dark world that overlays our own. An unconventional use of AR technology, the suspense-fueled interactive story takes you into the depths of a detailed animated world, where you become Caliban, the scion of a broken lineage struggling to understand your own dark origin story.
Users playing as Caliban are invited to explore the ruins of your family estate, and the incredible realm below, as you seek clues to your past and the events that severed you from your family long ago. This thriller VR/AR experience was developed in 360-virtual reality by Michael Conelly’s Blackthorn Media, an Academy and Emmy award-winning team of creators that are bringing their professional skills to interactive narrative in room-scale VR & AR.
Caliban Below is one chapter of “The Abbot’s Book,” and is designed to maximize VR and AR as narrative media, using the immersive world and interactive plot points to augment the thrills and align audiences to the protagonist. Audiences are invited to become Caliban, to see the world through his eyes, hear his thoughts, and learn the truth of the several incredible mysteries that wait in a realm below. Each player will have a unique view of the world, with rich details rewarding exploration. Sound and music function in a dynamic way, triggered by certain movements and locations.
The experience has earned a range of honors, including most recently winning Outstanding Achievement at Beverly Hills Infinity Film Festival, as well as Best Horror VR experience at Cinequest Film Festival.
